EMCOL 500 is brand name of Chloramphenicol 500mg. It is an antibiotic that fights bacteria but not viral infections. It is used to treat certain types of serious infections caused by bacteria when other antibiotics cannot be used. It works by killing the bacteria that cause these problems.

Dose and Direction of Use

Swallow the capsule whole by mouth. You can take it with or without food but it is better to take at a fixed time. Don't crush, chew or break the tablet. Follow the dose and duration as prescribed by the doctor.

Mode of Action

This capsule is an antibiotic which stops the growth of bacteria. It does so by preventing protein synthesis. This does not directly kill the bacteria, but prevents them from increasing in numbers, and eventually clears up the infection.
