ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active.
It occurs in around 5% of school-age children. For every girl affect ted nine boys are affected.
Symptoms
- : The child maybe predominantly inattentive or hyperactive or combined.

- forget or lose things a lot
- squirm or fidget
- talk too much
- make careless mistakes or take unnecessary risks
- have a hard time resisting temptation
- have trouble taking turns
- have difficulty getting along with others

Diagnosis
IQ tests and various structured tests by teachers and parents. Eye and ear examination to rule out other problems of inattention.
Complications
- Low self esteem
- Mood swings
- Inappropriate conduct which after 18 years of age is labeled as antisocial personality disorder
- Drug abuse and school failure
Treatment
Combination of behavior therapy and medications
- Psychological, social and educational intervention to make home and school environment stable.
