Mood disorders are those which affects our mental state by altering our state of mood. It includes depression, mania and bipolar affective disorder(BPAD)

What is Depression?

Depression which is a common term we use in a day to day life. Yet it has so much of depth and darkness attached to it.every depression has a story.
A depressive episode is characterized by 

  • Low mood
  • Loss of interest
  • Reduced energy
  • Auditory hallucination

It harms your day to day activities and functions. It is more common in females. The main and worst outcome of depression is suicidal tendency, which is markedly increased in depression.

What is Mania?

Maina is a elevated mood state basically the person is happy and feels on top of the world. An episode of mania comprises of:

  • Increased self esteem
  • Decreased need for sleep-the person can be energetic even after an hour of sleep
  • Shifting of one thought from another
  • Grandiosity, feeling of self as a god

What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar affective disorders include both episodes of depression and mania alternatively.

How to overcome and tackle these mood disorders?

Here are five simple ways that helps to overcome these mood disorders. 

The earlier the better

Well, the first thing you should know is that it is very common. Anyone can have these disorders but, they are not talked about. These mood disorders can be treated on OPD basis on early stages. Which means you do not have to get admitted to a psychiatric ward.so if you have any signs of depression please do a favor to yourself go and visit a psychiatrist and counselor and get the necessary treatment. You should understand the disease process and take it as other disease which is curable if treated with medications. So, give a try to overcome it at the earliest.

Medical treatment

Your mental health doctor may prescribe you a range of medications that you may need to take over a quite long period of time. Never start or adjust the medicine on your own without the prescription of a certified mental healthcare provider. 

Lifestyle changes

  • Maintain a good sleep hygiene which includes regular hours of sleeping, avoiding caffeine at night.
  • Avoid alcohol intake and smoking; its good for no one.

Maintain your weight

There is high rate of depression and mania to obese people. So, maintaining weight is also a key to overcome it. Avoid high carbohydrate and fatty foods. Instead replace with healthy alternatives. Increase leafy vegetables in your diet. The craving for sweet food can increase in bipolar disorders dule to low level of serotonin. Hence, avoiding excessive unwanted sugars is necessary.

Do exercise; make yourself busy

Moderate and regular exercise can have a great benefit. So, go on brisk walking or just do breathing exercises or yoga which shall contribute to mental wellbeing in long run. Keep yourself busy and do something productive or as you like in our spare time.

When to see a doctor?

Visit to a doctor is recommended if it is the first time of experiencing the symptoms or if you have discontinued the treatment. If you have developed any suicidal thoughts then call the hotline for mental health assistance or visit ED of any hospital nearby.
